We're about a month into our Summer 2025 course and we're starting to receive word that our Spring cohort is passing the NREMT. Woohoo!
It was a humbling semester for some and myself. During one particular office hours session, a student came in to retake their first practical [airway, respiratory, and cardiac]. About halfway through the first scenario, I had to stop the student due to poor performance. I then asked what's been going on and why they're struggling with the material. They then shared that they've been battling homelessness since the beginning of class. At that moment, nothing about the class mattered. If you don't have your basic necessities met, how do you expect to have the mental bandwidth to focus on the class? and I completely understand the individuals that need this class to open up potential opportunities but damn. We will do our best to be reasonable and accommodating.
That being said, we saw an increased presence in office hours. It was our second class hosting it. I observed several students that had a tumultuous beginning to the course and committed to consistent office hours in order to turn it around.
We then hosted an impromptu youtube session in one of our last office hours where students to sit in the hotseat and experience a "final boss" scenario from one of our instructors. The stress definitely prepped them for the actual final practical.
Cheers to you all and see you out there,
Vic
